Read full description of the books The Declaration of Independence: A Study in the History of Political Ideas:When rating this book with four stars, I am rating it as a historical monograph that is thorough and intelligently written; being entertaining was not - and indeed should not have been - one of his main concerns in writing this book. Still, it was slow going at times. Having said that, I learned a great deal about the Declaration of Independence by reading this book, in particular the history of the philosophy behind it. Superficial treatments of early American history often play up the breadth and depth of learning of the men who founded the United States, but always in generalities. This book traces the specific philosophical currents that provided the credible underpinning for the Declaration and, in the final chapter - a Nachleben of sorts of those same ideas - shows the way in which those values that seemed self-evident to Jefferson and many of his American contemporaries fell out of favor, even in the U.S., in the nineteenth century; this, to me, was a surprising development, in light of the modern day deification of the Founding Fathers and the baffling legitimacy attributed to the notion of Constitutional originality in American political and judicial discourse.
In the end, although this isn't the lightest or liveliest of summer reading, it is well worth picking up for anyone interested in one of our most fundamental founding documents.
